FCC proposes ‘robocall scorecard’ to rate voice service providers

The Federal Communications Commission is seeking public comment on creating a “robocall scorecard” to measure how voice service providers are protecting consumers from illegal calls.

The FCC is seeking feedback on “key principles” for the creation and usability of a robocall scorecard, according to a commission statement. Those principles would include ensuring the scorecard is easy to understand and accessible to consumers, establishing rating criteria that are relevant and accurate, and creating an iterative process to improve it.

The FCC “aims to develop a scorecard that will give consumers more information about the measures providers are taking to fight illegal robocalls, and it will also incentivize providers to improve their efforts,” Chairman Brendan Carr said.

In related news, the FCC this week removed 14 voice service providers from the Robocall Mitigation Database, effectively cutting them off from the U.S. telecommunications network.

In a statement, the commission said the providers were ordered to correct deficiencies in their database certifications and show cause why they should not be removed. “But these companies failed to respond or take meaningful steps to update their database filings,” it said.
