Trump auto tariffs: Asian, European carmakers fear “negative implications” for global economy

World leaders, automakers and business experts across the globe are condemning U.S. President Donald Trump Thursday, after the Republican leader threatened “large scale” tariffs on all cars and vehicles made outside of the U.S.

An executive order signed by Trump Wednesday stated that the U.S. was taking action to protect their automobile industry, which it claimed is “vital to national security and has been undermined by excessive imports.”

Among the many expressing disdain about Trump’s decision was Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishib. Speaking in Tokyo Thursday, he argued the U.S. decision, saying, “we are one of the biggest investors in the U.S.” Ishib further posed the question: “Is it right that all countries are treated the same?”

The auto tariffs are set to go into effect April 2 and will not apply to U.S.-made parts in foreign-made vehicles, according to Trump’s order.
